OUR PLANTS
Our plants are:
-
Peat Free
Growing plants in peat causes huge environmental damage to habitats but also in carbon emissions. All of our home grown stock has been peat free for over a decade and we are committed to buying peat free, where we state that plants must have no new peat after January 2026 in line with RHS policy.
-
Plant Healthy
Rosara at Nicholsons was a very early adopter of Plant Healthy Certification, giving you the assurance that your plants have been carefully selected to offer most resilience to biosecurity issues. We are trained to ensure you receive the very best quality.
-
Best Quality
We are proud of our horticultural roots - every plant is nurtured to offer the best chances of establishment and every customer will receive the very best advice - right plant right place. Plants are becoming increasingly more important in balancing our ecosystem and we are here to support your planting decisions.

FAQs
-
Rosara does not sell olive trees as they act as hosts to a very serious bacteria called Xylella fastidiosa. If this disease were to come to the UK it would affect hundreds of different species of plants including our very valuable native oak. It has decimated the olive industry in Europe and if it came to Britain, it would have enormous economic impact to the horticultural industry. There is no known cure once the disease is established.
At Rosara, we would encourage you to plant other species for example Eleagnus or Quercus ilex - please call us for advice suitable for your planting project.

The best alternatives to box hedging are Lonicera pileate and nitida but you have to keep them well clipped. We also recommend Yew hedging as it forms a nice dense dark green canopy but it will need clipping 4 times a year and you will need to use root barrier to contain the roots. Alternatively you might consider an upright green euonymus like Jean Hughes.
